Inventory of agency activities

Reporting and outreach for decisionmakers

  • National policymakers
  • International community
  • Local/Regional governments
  • Businesses and NGOs

Reporting and outreach for the public

Outreach for K-12 education

How you can help

Rationale

"Improved coordination, reporting, and outreach among federal agencies are required to make research results and decision support resources more readily available and useful to stakeholders...." - from CCSP draft plan, Chapter 13

Serving various audiences

Two primary kinds of stakeholders

  • Those affected by climate information
    • Includes policymakers, resource managers, the scientific community, the private sector, NGOs, and the international community
  • Those involved in education
    • Includes the general public and K-12 students, as well as those who communicate information (the media and educators)

Current inventory of agency activities

Identify efforts at participating agencies, e.g.

  • Responses to public inquiries for information
  • Management of web sites and other electronic tools
  • Distribution of brochures, fact sheets, other materials
  • Support for museum exhibits and other public displays
  • Participation in conferences, seminars, other events
  • Sponsorship of briefings, lectures, media events
  • Funding for outreach efforts outside the federal arena
  • Coordinate and facilitate outreach efforts through interagency workgroup

    Reporting and outreach
    for decisionmakers

Providing information for decisionmakers -including resource managers, public officials, and others - is a CCSP priority.

    Examples of CCSP outreach
    to national policymakers

Annual publication of Our Changing Planet

Congressional briefings on research results and program accomplishments

Scientific and technology assessment report in cooperation with the National Climate Change Technology Initiative (NCCTI)

    Facilitation of interagency communications

    Local/Regional governments,
    Businesses and NGOs

Need an understanding of existing and planned resources and technologies available to support their decisions, as well as state-of-the-art observations of climate variability.

    International community

Reaching the international audience through internet, publications, and other information resources

    Support for Decision Makers

CCSP will provide much-needed information on data, research, scenarios, and model outputs to help with planning

Also, will direct users to available resources and technologies

    For governments, businesses,
    and NGOs, CCSP will facilitate...

Integration of useful information about science and technology that will emerge from coordination of the Climate Change Research Initiative (CCRI) and NCCTI

Coordination agency outreach efforts with basic information that links initiatives with broader CCSP activities

Regional identification of key stakeholders through workshops, other activities

    Reporting and outreach
    for the public

A well-informed public is essential to respond effectively to challenges posed by global change

They need clear, consistent, and accurate information about research and findings

    Outreach for K-12 education

A focus on teachers and instructional resources, including the Internet

  • Provide pedagogically and scientifically sound lessons and activities
  • Build on agencies' existing education and outreach efforts for students and educators
  • How you can help

CCSP would like stakeholder input on:

    • Priorities for outreach and reporting mechanisms and products
    • Ideas for outreach initiatives or opportunities for improvement
